Baked Plums with Walnut and Honey

Baked Plums with Walnut and Honey

Baked Plums

This dessert makes you happy on a dark, rainy autumn day. The combination of plums baked with walnuts and cinnamon are very delicious together. Complete the dish by adding a bit of coconut yogurt. Simply yum! I love the scent of the cinnamon that pervades my kitchen during the baking. There are so many different types of plums, but for this recipe I used Black Amber. I grew up eating a lot of plums, because my grandparents had a Damsom plum tree in their garden. To make them last longer and to not let them go to waste, my grandma would make and fill a lot of jam jars with plum jam.

When is plum ripe?

It’s difficult to tell if a piece of plum is ripe just by looking. What makes it even more difficult is that plums ripen to many colors depending on the variety. You have Black Amber which is almost black, Damsons are purple, Mirabelles are yellow, Victoria is pink and Greengages are green. Growing up with a plum tree, I learned first-hand to pick ripe plums. Of course, the best way to determine ripeness is to taste them. A ripe plum is very sweet, flavorful, and juicy. But it would be difficult to bite in every single one at the shop to determine ripeness. The next best thing is a smell test. A ripe plum should smell sweet and fruity. An unripe plum will have little to no smell. And last but not least you can touch them to know for sure. They should be soft to the touch but firm enough to hold shape. Be careful to not buy overripe plums.

Tip!

A ripe plum should smell sweet and fruity. An unripe plum will have little to no smell.

Walnuts

Unfortunately, in some parts of Europe, walnut trees have been plagued by disease. I used to get walnuts every year from my mom. But for past few years her walnut trees have been sick too. And my heart is broken. That was the best walnut ever. It’s not an exaggeration because it’s always the best when you can take it off yourself fresh from the tree. And you know also that it is free of any chemical.
